Half-French with an agile, inquiring mind, Rosemary Lewis cannot help being out of the ordinary in Thurston, the Cumbrian market town where she grows up between the wars. Her ideas and ideals are not shared by those around her and she is in love with Wilfred, her scholarly cousin in London. But Wilfred feels bound to marry another girl and Rosemary is driven inwards to the solace of books, taking a job as a librarian. When she meets Edgar, a down to earth farmer's son, he is determined to win her and, attracted by their differences, they marry. But they soon realise that neither understands the other and Rosemary cannot raise Edgar to her level of moral refinement. Their stormy relationship ends with Edgar leaving her for a quiet country girl. Rosemary suffers a breakdown but emerges with her ideals intact to settle once again in Thurston as a librarian, still in love with Edgar but alone.
