It's something of a shame the way McNab has been lumped in with his successors and inferiors in the high-octane Boy's Book market, since he's a far better writer than he's usually given credit for. Certainly his prose is occasionally clogged with details of automatic weapons (and he has strange notions about when to end a chapter), but he structures a thriller with real skill, and delivers it at pace and with an air of authority that only a man with his SAS background can have. This latest (and certain) bestseller has agent Nick Stone set against South East Asian affiliates of the Al Qaeda network - fundamentalist allies of Bin Laden about to wreak a terrible havoc upon the major cities of the West. Stone's ally is a woman field agent who's motives he can't understand and his complication is a teenage girl he treats as his daughter who's traumatic past bubbles right to the surface, forcing him into a dangerous trade-off as he takes on both the terrorists and his own side.
